Table for Two

Leadership transitions where the founding executive remains in the organization after stepping down as CEO are rare and potentially risky.  However in certain cases, they can be of enormous lasting value to the organization.

In Table for Two:  Can Founders and Successors Co-Exist So Everyone Wins?, MAG researched successful cases where the departing CEO remained after stepping down from top post and continues to make significant and positive contributions under the new executive leadership.  The study findings reveal that there are critical organizational and personal factors that can load such situations for success and greatly contribute to organizational strength and sustainability.

We can expect more organizations to explore this option as baby-boomers look to pass the leadership of their organizations on to the next generation.  Understanding these factors and knowing when - and when not to - encourage a founding or long-term executive to stay on after stepping down will be of great value to boards and CEO's.

Sessions on this topic are appropriate for founders, potential successors, board members, foundation program officers, and consultants engaged in leadership transitions or considering the impact of such transitions on the field as a whole.

Participants will:
  • Become familiar with an expanded range of options available to boards and executive leaders when the founding or long-term CEO still has much to contribute to the organization but no longer wishes to be in the CEO role.
  • Learn the organizational and personal factors necessary for successful leadership transitions of this nature.
  • Understand the critical role that boards, staff, funders, and external consultants can play in supporting the success of this sort of transition.
